Taking a Mexican bite of the Big Apple...
Could I have some corn dough please? Oops, make that none.
And so the allotment has been swapped in favour of the Big Apple this week - you know how it is when there's too much weeding to do. Taking in New York's culinary offering is probably the best thing to do, when like me, you're body is still deciding what to do with the fact that you've been awake for 21 hours. There's nothing like a 5-hour time difference to confuse your inner body clock, but I'm pretty sure that filling your stomach helps to de-fuzz a jet-lagged brain.
The first pit stop in New York has been a Mexican place on West Broadway, which seems big with local trade and sports a Zagat mention on the front door. We sat there, in our slightly dazed state and ordered margaritas and beers and dipped into the huge stack of very good tortilla chips and salsa that arrived on our table without us asking. If only that happened back in the UK...
We ordered tilapia fish tacos and tamale along with a ridiculously huge bowl of guacamole. The guacamole was the business, the tacos not bad and the tamale just down right weird. Mostly made up from steamed corn dough (it looks as good as it sounds), it won on the stodge front but not much else. In fact it just looked wrong, as food goes. Whilst the avocado overdose was probably a good thing for a bit of cerebral de-fuzzing, I'm pretty sure corn dough isn't. Hey - you live and learn. No more tamale here thanks.
