If you've been tuning into The Little Paris Kitchen on BBC Two lately, you'll know what Rachel Khoo is all about.
A delicious lunch of wasted food will be served up to 5000 people on Wednesday 16th December 2009, to highlight the high levels of food waste in the UK. The event has been organised by waste campaigner and author of Waste: Uncovering the Global Food Scandal, Tristram Stuart, in partnership with Save the Children, ActionAid, This is Rubbish and FareShare.
The feast will be made from donated fresh, but below normal commercial standard produce from farms, produce packers and markets. The “cosmetically imperfect” food items will then be prepared in commercial kitchens who have donated their resources to promote the cause. Households in the UK waste 25% of all the food they buy, according to the Feed the 5000 campaign. It is also estimated 20% - 40% of fruit and vegetables are rejected before they even reach the shops.
The bishop of London will attend the event to address the crowd, and there will also be a cookery masterclass by Thomasina Miers, chef and owner of Wahaca.
The 'Feed the 5000' event will be held on 16th December 2009 from 12pm - 2pm at Trafalgar Square. For more information visit www.feeding5k.org
