If you've been tuning into The Little Paris Kitchen on BBC Two lately, you'll know what Rachel Khoo is all about.
This week is the RSPCA’s annual Freedom Food Farm Animal Week. The Freedom Food Programme that the RSPCA run aims to improve animal welfare and make sure food is labelled so that it is clear how it has been farmed. The aim of Food Farm Animal Week is to educate Britain about how animals are farmed and about how to go about making sure the meat we are buying is farmed well.
This is a great event where you can learn about all different kinds of animal farming, from fish to fowl to fauna, promoting the importance of buying higher welfare farmed meats. The RSPCA have been conducting a survey, the results of which will be released at the beginning of the week, to see how much people know about the lives of farmed animals. The RSPCA website will be launching new games and quizzes to inform people about how high up the welfare scale they are and how to improve.
They have also set the challenge of asking everyone to “Switch One For Welfare”, i.e. switch one item (or more if possible) from your weekly shop to a Freedom Food item, like swapping your Sunday leg of lamb for a Freedom Food approved leg, or the milk in your tea for milk from Freedom Food approved dairy cows.
The Freedom Food programme is not just a one week thing and is a permanent operation run by the RSPCA. For more information on Freedom Food Farm Animal week and the Freedom Food programme see the RSPCA website: http://www.rspca.org.uk/freedomfood
