A search for Britain’s World Class Bartender

MasterChef’s John Torode

Bartenders of Britain will have the chance to impress MasterChef judges, John Torode and Gregg Wallace in the World Class 2009/2010 competition. Drinks super brand Diageo (which includes bar staples such as Tanqueray No. Ten, Johnnie Walker Blue Label and Ketel One) are taking their competition around Britain in a series of heats that will whittle the competition down to the best 12. The winner of the overall title will then compete in the global final in July. Barrie Wilson, Diageo Reserve Brand ambassador team manager insists the bartender is a key ingredient is the success of a fine dinning experience and that the country's best don’t get the applause, unlike chefs, that they deserve. “World Class is a great platform to highlight bartending as the artform that it has become,” said Wilson.

Mixologists will be expected to create liquid masterpieces in the categories of rum, gin and vodka. Gregg Wallace said, “Using quality ingredients and combining complementing flavours is the key to a great dish and it’s the same when it comes to drinks.” He goes on, “bartenders who are taking part in World Class will be showcasing drinks that are undoubtedly masterpieces in their own right.”
