Vanilla

Vanilla sits on an unassuming stretch of Great Titchfield Street – so unassuming in fact, that you could easily walk right past it, which we, erm….did. Once we realised the error of our ways (is there not a human sat nav plug-in available yet?), we backtracked and found the entrance. After the descent into Vanilla we found the bar too, and were promptly settled into a booth by an attentive waitress.

Viet Grill

E2 8DP London Shoreditch 58 Kingsland Road,  Our evening at Viet Grill was unforgettable and I’ve never had a restaurant experience like it, not only because of the scrumptious, beautiful food. On the tube on the way to Viet Grill I sat opposite a drunken Australian. He leant his bowler-hated head towards me and asked, concerned, if I had a Monopoly board he could borrow as he didn’t want to miss his stop.

Villier’s Terrace

N8 8JP London Crouch End 120 Park Road Crouch End has been creeping its way towards gentility for so long, that it’s easy to forget it was once a bastion of bad charity shops and old men’s bars. Villier’s Terrace is one such pub that’s recently made the transition from slightly dodgy boozer to slick gastro-pub, presumably to make it more appealing to Crouch End’s increasing population of moneyed middle class types.

Volupté

EC4A 1EJ London 9 Norwich Street Listening to the likes of Jacque Brel and the old Vaudeville gin-house crooners can make you long to experience the days of little back street clubs with live music and entertainments. The Volupté Lounge is the modern equivalent of this once so popular amusement. Navigating the side streets of Chancery Lane, away from the prying eyes of High Holborn, the Norwich Street venue is marked with a ‘V’ above the door of its otherwise secretive location.

Wallace and Co

SW15 2SW London Putney 146 Upper Richmond Road, Wallace & Co is located in a huge space for Putney, where real estate is premium. This new venture from MasterChef's Greg Wallace, has obviously been based on substantial research. The space they have created is casual and homely and it feels as though you are walking into a terraced house dining room in this South West London suburb. It’s replete with exposed brick walls, stripped wooden floors and kitchen dining tables.

Waterloo Bar & Grill

SE1 8UL London 119 Waterloo Road Formerly Waterloo Brasserie, this restaurant and bar is slap bang opposite The Fire Station pub next to Waterloo Station. Having eaten here whilst it was still the brasserie, I’ve always been a fan of the restaurant. It’s a versatile place – great for some pre-theatre cocktails, sat up at the sleek bar bar, great for some really decent jazz if you visit on the right night, and great for some classic dishes at reasonable prices.

Waterloo Brasserie

SE1 8UL London 119 Waterloo Road For commuters spilling out of Waterloo station, there’s finally somewhere across the road where you can fill up on restorative food and notable cocktails. The brasserie sits on Waterloo Road, within sight of one of London’s busiest stations, and the theatrical allure of The Old Vic. If you’ve got a night booked out at said theatre, you could do little better than to slip into the brasserie for some very good cocktails as a pre-theatre warm up.

Wingrove House
